Sunfeast 10k 2010
I have been a moderate runner. Running about 3 kms minimum whenever i can make it to gym. My week is generally divided between squash and running. This year so far i have managed to run just around 250 kms [thats not much but then i don't just do running].
After strictly practicing running for about 3 weeks, it was my turn to do the real thing. In all my practice sessions, i had never actually done anything beyond 8kms. The confidence that ORRCA 10k gave me was enough for me to think ill be able to do this one too. A day before the event, as advised, i tried hard to get rest and keeping myself hydrated. Forced myself to turn in early so as to have good rest for the big day.
I have to agree waking up that early [5:30] was as difficult as running the whole thing. We all had to gather at the holding up area & i could spot a LOT of fellow Cisco folks. At the gun shot, whole scene turned into a stampede and i was freakishly scared of falling off the stairs. After a lot of pushing and shoving, we made it to the athletic track. For the first 1.5 kms it was too hard to find the space to run. It reduced to merely walking. Then started the real fun. I made a mistake of not wearing the watch today. My only way of keeping track of times was my ipod which i checked only when i was through with 4km mark. It showed 32 mins :(. It was a reason to worry knowing it took me 8 mins / km. I tried to cover up for my loss then. I must mention it was a real disappointment to not find as many mobile washrooms as were projected in the welcome kit. I stopped at just one cooling area and manage to just run the rest of time. At around 7km mark, heat was at its peak and i could see a lot of people starting to take a break. I knew i didn't have too much time to me so i kept running. At 8km mark, there were folks from radio on roads who were yelling "JUST TWO KMS LEFT". Believe it or not that did motivate. I was under the impression that the run would finish inside the stadium but to my disappointment it ended close to the stadium entry. I made a note of time, and it was ~70 mins. I had expected myself to complete it a little faster but then i guess i could never make up for the loss of time incurred in the first 4 kms.
Short story shorter, it was fun to have completed it but i think the facilities could have been better. I have had a good amount of rest post-run and preparing to get back to 'regular' life from tomorrow :)
Hoping to run many more and faster.
